Why Your Mindset Determines Results

As a student, your mindset matters the most to face the challenges in studying and acquiring a good result. Your abilities and talent will improve gradually through hard work and effort. To get a strong mind you need to face challenges with open arms and see failure as a learning experience. You must trust in yourself and always try your best at any problem you face in life. Here, I will explain how it can determine your results. But before that, let’s understand what a mindset even is.

What is a mindset?

A mindset is the way a person thinks, the thinking process that shapes our reality and activities. It gives meaning to how we treat ourselves and the people around us. It is a special collection of ideas, values, models, perceptions, and morals about life and how you choose to live it.

Types of mindsets:

You are able to form it as you go through your life; your experiences form the way you think, and your decisions form how well you perform in life. Your mindset is determined by the combination of all the big and small factors of your life. You are able to form one of two types of mindsets: fixed and growth.

mindset

Fixed mindset:

Fixed mindsets are when a person believes that they are only capable of what they already have. They believe they are limited to what they know from their previous experiences. They live in a cage where they believe that they cannot grow more, become better. A person with a fixed mindset thinks that there is no room for improvement and that if they fail, it’s the end. They are unable to become a better person. They believe that their talent and confidence are the only reasons for success; there is no need for effort.

Growth mindset:

On the other hand, a person with a growth mindset is able to trust the process. They are able to learn from their failures. A person with a growth mindset believes that only through sheer consistency and effort can improvement be made. They try to be a better version of themselves every day. Their minds are free from the burden of failure where failure doesn’t mean the end of everything but rather, it means more room to improve upon, more space to try even harder. According to a person with a growth mindset, the possibilities are endless; any peak can be reached if tried hard enough.

One misconception about mindset:

I used to think that mindset is similar to a person’s mood, but a person’s mood can change at any time while a person’s mindset cannot be changed so easily. It takes a lot of thought and time for it to change.

Why your mindset determines results:

The way you think heavily determines how well your result will be. A student’s mindset can either be his best friend or his worst enemy. The importance of a strong mindset is crucial. The best ways to create a good mindset can vary from person to person, but here, I will tell you what I have learned throughout my student life.

It affects how we approach a task and the approach affects the outcome of the result. For a student, the way you approach your academic struggles will determine the outcome. If you believe that you will be able to learn a topic within a given period of time, then there is no stopping it. But if you think that there isn’t enough time at hand, you aren’t capable of finishing said task properly, you’ll fail if you don’t give enough effort, then you have already lost.

The winner of a war is determined before it even starts.

Sun Tzu

If you have the mindset of a winner, then you’ll be able to think properly and have a path to follow to reach the end goal. But if you are struggling to keep good grades, then you need to consider changing the way you think, the way you approach your problems. In short, you need to change your thinking process.

Dr. Crum shared his thoughts in this video about how you can change It. Where she explains with examples the impact of a person’s mindset on the outcome. The outstanding effect of mindset is visualized in her presentation.

Control your mindset:

If you can control your mindset, then nothing can stop you from achieving what you desire. Try to work on yourself, read a book, work out, wake up in the morning, write a journal. The impact of small habits is indispensable. Simple acts will compound into a greater mindset. You will be able to build a strong one only when you accept that your mindset depends on the way you think.

Surround yourself with people of similar mindset:

There is a saying that “You are the average of the five people you interact most with.” This means that your mindset will be influenced by the people you contact with, your friends. That is why you need to be conscious of whom you decide to spend the majority of your day with. Because if your friends have a bad or fixed mindset, you will be stuck with them too. But if you are accompanied by people with an open mindset, you will see them influencing you positively, and at the end of the day, you will improve gradually.

Follow the people you admire:

In this day and age, you are able to know more stories of people thanks to the help of technology. Find people who inspire you, who have similar thoughts as you, who you can admire. This way, you will be able to learn about the ins and outs of different aspects of your life. I follow Jordan Peterson in this case.

You will be inspired to do better and learn more about the world. Since a person’s mindset affects all parts of his life, you can incorporate what you learn from them in your academic life as well.
